Their place was taken by a slew of fresh stars bringing fine tunes with the help of a new generation of record producers and composers.The early '80s is one of the most overlooked and prolific eras of R&B music and reflected a very refreshing time. Many artists who had dominated the previous twenty years struggled to find a place in this new chapter. On record sleeves of '80s R&B albums you'll notice the variety of electronic musical instruments and devices like drum machines, samplers, sequencers, synthesizers or bass synths that became popular during that period: E-mu SP-1200, E-mu Emulator II, Fairlight CMI I-III, Linn Electronics LinnDrum, Akai MPC-60 sampler, Akai S-1000 sampler, Oberheim DSX, Oberheim DMX, Oberheim OB-8, Oberheim OB-Xa, Arp Omni, Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, Moog MiniMoog, Moog MemoryMoog, Korg ElecTribe, Korg PolySix, Korg Poly-800, Roland Juno-60, Roland Jupiter-8, Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, Yamaha DX7 and the New England Digital Synclavier II. Music became more keyboards-minded and soon turned high-tech as it gradually evolved into sophisticated Urban Contemporary towards 1983. The large funkbands restructured into smaller economical entities. The orchestral Philly sound was fading away in favor of the one-man band approach, the MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) system, fresh music technology and creative synth programming. In the '80s Soul and Funk got smoother and less live and acoustic than in previous decades.
